Work in Progress – LLS SDLs designing Digital Badges for Badgeathon 17th January

A big thank you to Jon, Jo and Tally for doing these doing the holidays so that people have something to work on at the Badgeathon on the 17th January at Mozilla in London.

This follows Tom and Lucy coming in from DigitalMe for www.gr8ict.com/2012/12/15/digital-leaders-badges-1-11th-december-2012/ and then I set it as an assignment on Edmodo for the holidays.  I’m discussing these with the LLS ICT Learning Team on Monday and on the 15th Jan with my DLs.  My DLs will talk a bit about badges at their talks at BETT13.

Designing a Digital Badge
DUE: Jan 8, 2013

1. Role: Choose a *Role* from Teacher; Designer; Coach; Web
Manager ; Presenter; Explorer, Producer
2. Activity: Link it to something you have done as a digital leader
3. Steps: Write about the steps of the activity involved – try to make it into Learning / Doing / Assessment
4. What SKILLS is the DL learning through this?
5. WHO: Who does the assessing of these skills?
6. HOW: How do you know the DL has been successful in gaining these skills?
7. Badge: Design a badge to represent this…

Discuss anything you like on Edmodo clearly stating the name of the badge you are working on.
Hand in Design and answers 1-6 in this assessment – by next term… Amazon tokens as prizes and we will show the best at BETT13. The best ones will be made into real digital badges by Tim and Lucy at DigitalMe.

These are Jo’s Notes – please use them and my notes in square brackets to help you with your ideas.
1. Role: Teacher
2. Activity: Prezi to the school [other students?] 3. Steps:
a. Learn how to use the software,
b. Teach others to use software,
c. set homework to make a great working Prezi.
4. What SKILLS is the DL learning through this?
>They learn how to work in groups or [explain how they learn to work in groups and why?] individually to teach [what skills involved in this?] and share there knowledge affectively [what skills involved in this?].
5. WHO: Who does the assessing of these skills?
The people DL’s teach. [students? or teachers?] 6. HOW: How do you know the DL has been successful in gaining these skills?
The people they are teaching learn the software and can use it affectively. [how do you measure this?] 7. I really like the badge Jo. A simple icon makes it very clear. [Is there a difference between teach and coach?]

These are Jon’s Notes – Thanks Jon.

1. Role: Explorer. [I think this may be several roles, Jon – this is why it is it is not simple to work out the badges – is it finding the software, teaching teacher etc …?] 2. Activity: Looking at new software such as Prezi and showing teachers how to use it.
3. Steps: Steps of the role: 1. To use the software and get a good idea of how to use it, 2. Show the person it little by little introducing new parts slowly.
4. What SKILLS is the DL learning through this?
You’re learning how everyone wants to use the software and finding different ways to do it to then put into your work.
5. WHO: Who does the assessing of these skills?
The Teacher or person you are teaching. [can students assess or does it need to be teachers only?] 6. HOW: How do you know the DL has been successful in gaining these skills?By the Teacher/Person going away and using it correctly, successfully and effectively in lessons.
7. Badge attached.

These are Tally’s notes – again, thank you – I really like the logo – remember, its the ideas that count as a professional designer will be making the chosen ones.

1. Role: Explorer [Interesting that you see this the same as Jon – or is it coaching or teaching or all 3?] 2. Activity: Finding new software, usi
3. Steps: a) Find the software and teach yourself how to use it [Is this a badge in its own right?] (or work in a group to do the same thing).
b) Create and present a project using the software.
c) Teach other students and/or teachers how to use it. [I like the progression Tally – learn, Apply, Teach] 4. What SKILLS is the DL learning through this? Groupwork, teaching and presenting skills are used, though you also learn how to apply different software to your work.
5. WHO: Who does the assessing of these skills? The teacher/students that was taught and/or presented to.
6. HOW: How do you know the DL has been successful in gaining these skills? You know they have been successful when the person that has been taught uses the software correctly and can apply it to work.
7. Badge: Design a badge to represent this… I’ll have to make it a GIF as i can’t download PDF [OK it works]
